Developer of New Vegas on the Possibility of a New Fallout Game
A Chance for New Vegas 2?
Fans of post-apocalyptic worlds hold Fallout: New Vegas in high regard, often considering it the pinnacle of the franchise. As a result, calls for a sequel or spinoff under the vision of New Vegas mastermind Josh Sawyer have persisted for years. Sawyer himself recently expressed a willingness to take on such a project—provided Bethesda grants him sufficient creative freedom.

Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, Fallout: New Vegas was released in 2010, built on the technological foundation of Fallout 3 by Bethesda. The result was an open-world RPG that continues to spark discussion and interest even in 2024. Earlier this year, fans were notably stirred when it appeared that the upcoming Fallout television adaptation might exclude New Vegas from the series canon. Given that both Obsidian and Fallout IP owner Bethesda are now under Microsoft’s corporate umbrella, speculation about a potential New Vegas 2 has intensified. While Sawyer has not confirmed anything definitive, he has shown openness to the idea.
In a Q&A video published on August 11 and highlighted by GamesRadar, Sawyer answered fan questions about his previous work, game design philosophy, and thoughts on RPGs in general. Toward the end of the discussion, he was asked how he would react if Microsoft or Bethesda approached him to lead another Fallout installment.
“Hmm, of course,” Sawyer replied with a smile. However, he clarified that before embarking on a new Fallout project, he would need to ask several key questions.
“Any venture, I think, hinges on understanding: What’s our goal? What framework are we working within? What freedoms are granted, and what constraints are imposed?” Sawyer explained.
Creative Freedom as a Key Factor
For Sawyer, creative autonomy is a pivotal factor. He stated that he would only consider taking on a new Fallout project—or any project based on existing intellectual property—if he wasn’t excessively constrained by the IP owners’ guidelines.
“With any intellectual property, especially one I’ve worked on before, the main question is: What can I explore this time that wasn’t attainable previously? If the restrictions are too tight, the project loses its appeal—who wants to work on something where the one idea you’re excited to explore is off-limits?” Sawyer remarked.
He also emphasized his enduring fascination with the Fallout universe, noting:
“I still believe there are countless untold stories in this world and myriad social issues left to explore.”

Sawyer concluded his reflections by acknowledging that working with any existing IP inevitably comes down to understanding “what we’re allowed to do and what we’re not” regarding its characters and world.
The Outlook for New Vegas 2
While the prospect of Sawyer leading a new Fallout game—potentially a continuation of New Vegas—is realistic, it would require Bethesda to grant him and his team the creative freedom they desire. Without it, the allure of returning to this irradiated wasteland might not be compelling enough.
