Updating your Valheim server

If you have your own Valheim dedicated server, you definitely need to know how to update it and make new additions. In this article, you will learn how to upgrade your Valheim dedicated server.

TIP

Firstly, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with our automatic backup system for all your servers in the GODLIKE panel!

Saving the last game state of the server

Before you upgrade your Valheim dedicated server, you need to make sure that the last game state is saved on your server.

TIP

If your server is not actively working, you do not have to do this

By default, Valheim servers automatically save their game state every 20 minutes. You will often see a message in the Valheim server console informing you of this. Example: 02/21/2021 14:10:07: World saved (773.1636ms).

IMPORTANT

This is important to note so that you don't waste time looking for the last completed server save

As an administrator connected to the Valheim server, you can execute the save command in the F5 console. The server will save the last state of the game so that there is no significant rollback when you restart the server.

CAUTION

Before starting the game after that, make sure that there are no players on the server

If there are players who are actively connected to the server, it is recommended to inform them about the upcoming server update and restart. Be a good Valheim administrator and give players at least 5 minutes' notice so that they have enough time to get back to a safe place to log out and prepare for the server update. Otherwise, players who are unaware of this may return to the game and experience a "rollback" or find themselves in a dangerous situation that they will have to deal with.

Stopping the Valheim server process

When a dedicated Valheim server is running, the "valheim_server.exe" application will be opened at the command prompt. This line shows the status of the server as it displays various information about the server, ranging from player connections, server events, etc.

To signal the end of the command line, press the CTRL and C keys simultaneously. In most cases, this will automatically and forcefully close the command prompt.

IMPORTANT

If the command prompt fails to close, be sure to read the last line for further instructions

After the job is successfully completed, the file will no longer be visible in the taskbar of your window.

How do I update the server using Steam console?

1) Launch Steam and log in to your account.

2) Make sure you have downloaded the latest version of the game.

3) Go to the console. To open the console, press CTRL + R on the keyboard and type "steam://open/console" in the new window that appears, then press Enter.

TIP

If the console does not work correctly, enter login and your Steam login and press Enter, then enter your account password

4) After logging in, direct the Steam console to your Valheim server files by entering: force_install_dir (then the directory (folder) where your server files are installed) and press Enter.

5) When you have connected the console to the folder, enter the app_update 896660 command in the console and press Enter. When finished, type app_update 896660 to validate.

6) That's it. Now type quit in the console to exit it.

Now you know the basics and know how to update your Valheim server. Play along with GODLIKE.
