In 2013, Redigit, the creative mind behind Terraria, disclosed ambitions for a sequel. While he affirmed that it would embrace many of the original's core elements, he hinted at groundbreaking innovations that would set it apart. He promised an evolution in gameplay that would immerse players in experiences vastly divergent from its predecessor, broadening the fabric of the Terraria universe.
One of the most tantalizing promises was the concept of infinite worlds. Unlike the bounded terrains of the original, the sequel aspired to feature sprawling environments teeming with diverse biomes, expanding the horizons of exploration.
Though whispers of its development began circulating in 2012, Redigit’s focus soon shifted to a spinoff project—Terraria: Otherworld—leaving the sequel's fate in limbo.
Terraria Otherworld: A Terraria Spinoff
Announced in 2012 on Terraria’s official forums, Terraria: Otherworld was envisioned as a sandbox adventure within an alternate dimension of the Terraria multiverse. The project resonated with fans, mirroring how Minecraft Dungeons expanded upon the Minecraft legacy.
Early updates showcased familiar biomes like the Forest, Tundra, Corruption, and Crimson, while teasing new locales such as Ocean and Space biomes. Novel artifacts, including the Gold-Plated Tomahawk, Crimson Axe, and Ore Buster, were also revealed, adding layers to its allure.
Perhaps the most striking departure was the graphical overhaul. Abandoning the iconic 16-bit aesthetic, Otherworld embraced a sleeker, more polished visual style while preserving the pixelated charm.
Despite its potential, hopes for Otherworld were extinguished in 2018 when the project was officially shelved, with developers citing insurmountable challenges.
Returning to Work on Terraria 2
With Terraria: Otherworld abandoned, Redigit redirected his energy back to the original game. Around this time, Terraria was preparing for its 1.3.5 update, marking a period of revitalization for the franchise.
Intriguingly, Cenx—Terraria’s designer, Re-Logic’s vice president, and Redigit’s spouse—fanned the flames of speculation. In a forum post, she alluded to a "game two" within the Terraria lineage, suggesting that development would gain momentum following the release of the 1.4.4 update. However, years passed with little tangible progress or official confirmation.

The rumor mill reignited when YouTuber Chippygaming noticed Redigit’s Twitter location change to “Terraria 2 – A New Age.” This cryptic update fueled theories that a sequel was indeed in the works.
Adding to the intrigue, Ted “Loki” Murphy, Re-Logic’s business lead, acknowledged that the team was deliberating over the project’s direction. Although Loki’s remarks were veiled, a concept map shared by Redigit hinted at early developmental ideas. These breadcrumbs rekindled hope for an authentic Terraria sequel.
Will There Be a Terraria 2?
As of now, official details about Terraria 2 remain scant. The developers have candidly expressed the challenges of stepping away from a franchise that continues to thrive—Terraria has seen a meteoric rise in sales, surging by 14.5 million copies within just two years.
Despite initial claims that Journey’s End would mark the game’s final chapter, updates persist. The upcoming 1.4.5 patch, anticipated in 2023, promises to infuse fresh content, including collaborative elements with the roguelike-Metroidvania game Dead Cells.
For now, fans are left to savor Terraria’s existing bounty, awaiting a definitive announcement that may illuminate the path to its sequel.
