In the vast universe of ARK Survival Evolved servers, one creature distinctly captures the imagination and practicality of players—the swift and agile Pteranodon. This aerial reptile is highly valued by survivors for its exceptional speed, maneuverability, and versatility, serving as an indispensable companion for exploration and rapid travel.

Finding the Pteranodon

Pteranodons frequent open coastal areas, beaches, and even dense forests throughout various regions of ARK's expansive maps. Easily recognizable by their broad wingspan and distinctive head crest, they often glide through the skies, periodically landing to rest. Survivors can exploit these resting periods for taming purposes.

Effective Taming Strategies

Successfully taming a Pteranodon involves careful planning due to their timid nature. At the slightest sign of threat, they take flight, making direct pursuit challenging. Here’s how you can efficiently tame one:

  • Restrain First: Use a Bola to immobilize the creature once it lands, preventing escape.
  • Sedation: Administer tranquilizer darts or arrows, aiming carefully at the body to minimize damage. Due to their lower health, excessive force can be lethal.
  • Feeding Preferences: When unconscious, feed them their preferred diet—Regular Kibble yields the best results, though Raw Prime Meat or Raw Mutton are excellent alternatives.
  • Keep It Sleeping: Watch torpidity carefully and use Narcotics or Narcoberries to keep it unconscious until taming completes.

Optimal Diet for Your Pteranodon

As carnivorous creatures, Pteranodons thrive on a diet rich in meats:

  • Top Choice - Regular Kibble: Prepared using eggs, jerky, vegetables, and fiber, this specialized food provides the best taming effectiveness.
  • Alternatives: Raw Mutton and Raw Prime Meat significantly enhance taming efficiency if kibble isn't accessible.
  • Common Meats: Although standard Raw Meat and Fish Meat suffice, they extend taming duration and lower effectiveness.

TIP

Breeding for Superior Flyers

Breeding Pteranodons allows survivors to create tailored companions with potentially enhanced stats and abilities. Here's a streamlined guide:

  • Set the Scene: Place one male and one female together in an enclosed environment.
  • Initiate Breeding: Activate the mating setting, keeping them close to ensure successful breeding.
  • Incubation: Once the egg is laid, maintain a stable temperature (around 29°C-31°C) for ideal conditions.
  • Hatch and Raise: Eggs hatch roughly after 1.5 hours. Young Pteranodons require frequent feeding with Raw Meat until they mature sufficiently to feed independently of feeding troughs. They reach adulthood after approximately 1 day and 13 hours.

Equipping and Riding Your Flyer

Once tamed, you’ll need a saddle, craftable at survivor level 38. Ingredients required include:

  • 230 Hide
  • 125 Fiber
  • 75 Chitin, Keratin, or Shell Fragments

Riding your newly-tamed flyer unlocks the true potential of the Pteranodon, making navigation across ARK’s diverse terrain easier and faster. However, managing stamina is crucial—overexertion might result in forced landings, potentially placing both mount and rider at risk.

Result

Pteranodons prefer Regular Kibble, crafted from eggs, cooked jerky, vegetables, and fiber, which ensures fast and effective taming. Alternatives like Raw Mutton or Raw Prime Meat also work efficiently, while basic meats (Raw Meat and Raw Fish Meat) prolong taming and reduce effectiveness.
