Valve, known for its projects like Half-Life and Steam, is developing a new gaming product called Deadlock. This product is likely to be classified as a third-person shooter with elements of team play, MOBA, and tower defense. Currently, Deadlock is in closed beta testing, but information about the game has leaked through uncontrolled video distribution on the internet, causing various reactions.
Development and Background
Details about Deadlock have become available thanks to information gathered from other Valve games and data mining over the years. Initially, the project might have had the code name Citadel and been known as Neon Prime. It is believed that development began in 2018, and since then, the game has undergone many changes. Although it was initially thought that the game would be set in the Half-Life universe, new data from gameplay videos suggest otherwise.
Today, Deadlock is presented as an online third-person hero shooter that includes MOBA-style lane maps, enemies to destroy, and speed routes similar to those used in Bioshock Infinite for quick movement between different zones.
The response to Valve's new game has been lukewarm. Interest in hero shooters has significantly declined, and the community does not seem to feel the need for another game with similar elements. The style and concept of the world in the game, not tied to any well-known IP, also cause confusion among fans who were expecting new developments in the Half-Life or Portal series but got something resembling a mix of Valorant and Overwatch.
According to Insider Gaming, players who have already tried Deadlock describe it as very similar to a MOBA, where heroes compete against monsters moving across the maps. Defeating these monsters allows players to earn money, which can be used to upgrade hero attributes during the match. It is also noted that a large boss appears in the center of the map and can be killed to earn additional currency.
Community Expectations and Valve's Reputation
There is some optimism about Valve's new project, but doubts remain about whether it meets the expectations of the community that remembers games like Half-Life 2 and Left 4 Dead. Valve has a reputation for being a quality developer, but its experience in creating original multiplayer games has not always met high standards.
DOTA 2, CSGO, and TF2 are successful projects that were adapted and developed by Valve from the ideas of external developers, becoming significant in the company's history. However, other attempts to create original online games, such as Artifact and Ricochet, have shown limited success.
