TL;DR
Fishing gets easier fast once you stop fighting two problems at the same time. Learn the mini-game in a calm spot, then upgrade your rod so you can use bait and tackle. A simple path is Training Rod for a few days, Fiberglass Rod at Fishing Level 2, then Iridium Rod at Fishing Level 6.
The mini-game in one minute
When a fish bites, your job is to keep the fish icon inside the green bar until the catch meter fills. Holding the button makes the bar rise, releasing makes it fall. The bar has momentum, so short taps usually give you more control than long holds.
If a fish is bouncing around, do not chase every pixel. Try to keep the bar near where the fish tends to return, then correct with quick taps.
Rod upgrades that actually matter
If fishing feels unfair, it is often because you are using a basic rod too long.
Training Rod (25g)

The easiest way to learn. The green bar is larger, so early fish feel manageable. It is perfect for getting your first Fishing levels without stress.
Fiberglass Rod (Fishing Level 2, 1,800g)

Your first real upgrade because it lets you use bait. More bites means more practice and faster leveling.
Iridium Rod (Fishing Level 6, 7,500g)

Bait plus tackle. This is the turning point for harder fish and legendary attempts.
Bait and two tackle picks
Bait is simple value. You spend less time waiting and more time playing the mini-game.
Once you have the Iridium Rod, these two tackles cover most needs:
Trap Bobber

More forgiving. Progress drops slower when the fish slips out of your bar.
Cork Bobber
A slightly bigger green bar. Great if you keep losing fish by a tiny margin.
Where to fish without memorizing everything
You do not need a spreadsheet to start.
Mountain Lake is calm and consistent for early practice and experience.

River is great when you want specific seasonal fish or bundle progress.

Ocean becomes more rewarding as your gear and skill improve.

If you see bubbling water, fish bite faster there. It is one of the best signals that a spot is worth your time.
Two fish people search constantly
Tilapia is an ocean fish you can catch in Summer and Fall during daytime hours. It is a solid seasonal sale fish, but it is not usually a top money-maker compared to later options.
Tiger Trout shows up in Fall and Winter in the river. It sells for more and fits nicely into winter routines when you are already moving through town.
A simple plan for legendary fish
Do not rush legendaries with a weak setup. Get the Iridium Rod first, then pick one legendary per season and plan around it.

The three mistakes that waste the most time
Staying on the Bamboo Pole too long. Bait speeds everything up.
Trying to force difficult fish at Fishing Level 0 or 1. A few levels make a huge difference.
Overcorrecting the bar. Light taps beat panic holds.
