Coal, an essential resource in 7 Days to Die, can be extracted from Coal Veins scattered across various biomes. These veins, similar in appearance to Stone Veins, are smaller and have a darker hue. Like other resource veins, Coal Veins indicate the presence of ore layers beneath them. Use tools such as axes or pickaxes to mine the material both from the vein itself and from deeper layers.
Additionally, coal can be gathered from charred trees in the Burnt Forest biome. Cutting down these burned trees with an axe yields both Coal and Wood. You can also collect Coal from smoldering piles of wood scattered throughout the Burnt Forest.
Though rare, coal can also be found while looting. Look for coal in barbecues and kitchen ovens.
Uses of Coal
Coal serves as a fuel source but also plays a crucial role in various recipes. Gunpowder, an important component, is crafted by combining coal and nitrate powder—a resource that can be found or gathered—in your crafting menu. After unlocking the recipe by reading Wasteland Treasures Vol. 4, you can craft Purified Mineral Water using coal, goldenrod flowers, and chrysanthemum flowers.
There are many other recipes that include coal, so be sure to check the list by clicking on coal in your inventory and selecting Recipes.
Mining coal, like any resource in 7 Days to Die, requires time and depletes stamina—however, there are strategies to optimize this process.
The amount of coal you collect depends on the type and level of your tool. A basic level 1 stone axe cannot match the effectiveness of a higher-level iron pickaxe for extracting coal from veins and layers. Equipping your axe with the Wood Splitter modification allows you to deal an additional 15% damage to wood, which is useful when searching for coal in the Burnt Forest. Equipping a steel pickaxe with the Bunker Buster modification increases its efficiency by 25% when used on stone.
By applying these tactics, you can significantly enhance your coal gathering efficiency and strengthen your resources.
