Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 Wilderness Bound Update: Dappled Forest, Abandoned Camps, Poplar Wood, and Everything New

Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 called the “Wilderness Update”, is officially out now! While this is not a major update yet, it still brings a lot of new and cool things into the game.

The update itself is all about the exploration and camping. Main additions to the game include a new, colorful biome “Dappled Forest”, new Poplar trees and wood, Abandoned Camps structures all over the world and fresh flora like Shelf Mushrooms and Red Shrub.

For builders and explorers, this update introduces new highly requested blocks like Straw Beds, placeable and usable cushions and a massive variety of Wool and Concrete building blocks(like slabs, stairs etc.).

Exciting, right? Well with the quick summary out of the way, let’s jump right into the new update in more detail!

What is Wilderness Bound Update?

Wilderness Bound is the name for the latest update 26.3 for Minecraft Java Edition, it’s core idea and vibe is exploration, wilderness and camping. All the new additions to the game are meant to make players view forest as something more than just a place to farm wood, it makes them want to go explore. New structure, items, blocks and mechanics play a big role in bringing this atmosphere to life. While it isn’t a major update for the game, all of the new additions to the game are very interesting and highly anticipated by the community, making this update interesting and worth while for practically any player there is. Additionally, it has a great SMP value to it.

The Dappled Forest Biome

The center stage of the update is the new Dappled Forest biome. It’s a forest with 3 different colorful trees painted the classic colors of autumn: yellow, orange and red. The update is truly on time, as it captures the feeling of the early autumn we are currently in perfectly.

Dappled Forest can be found near the cold biomes, because despite its warm look it is considered to be a colder biome inside the game. Just like we mentioned before, the biome is packed with different Poplar Trees, despite that, all of those trees will drop new type of logs and wood — Poplar Logs & Wood. The new flora mentioned before is also unique to the Dappled Forest.

On top of that, in the new biome you can find a new structure — Abandoned Camp. While it can spawn in other biomes as well, the camp itself has variations(which alter its look a bit) and the new biome has its own unique variation of the Abandoned Camp.

All and all, it’s a great, cozy, very aesthetically pleasing biome with plenty of new content, whether you want to just explore or make a new build aligned with the theme of the new update — Dappled Forest is the perfect place.

Poplar Trees and Poplar Wood Set

Just as mentioned prior, Dappled Forest introduces new Poplar Trees, with 3 different leaf color, but the same logs / wood. For builders this is a massive addition to the game, thanks to the very pleasing contrast of very colorful leaves and grey-ish wood and logs. Of course, just like with any other wood in the game, Poplar Logs and Wood have their own wood set with all the additional blocks: slabs, stairs, fences etc. We are already looking forwards to the great builds the community will make using these new blocks!

Shelf Mushroom and Red Shrubs

The new flora added in the update 26.3 truly makes the Dappled Forest feels alive:

• Shelf Mushroom: These mushrooms grow naturally on the sides of Poplar Trees and fallen logs. They come in small and large variants. Fully grown Shelf Mushrooms are not only for the aesthetic purposes only, you can harvest and use them to craft a stew.

• Red Shrubs: A beautiful, unique to the new biome plant, unlike the Shelf Mushroom it is completely decorative. If you use bone meal on it, it will spread and grow to nearby blocks if there is enough space. Additionally, it can be composted.

Fully grown Shelf Mushroom have slight bounciness if jump on top of them the same way beds do

Abandoned Camps

Abandoned Camps are a new structure added to the game alongside the other content. They, just like we mentioned before, can spawn in different variations and in different biomes(such as Meadow, Cherry Groove, Forest, Birch Forest, Taiga, Swamp, Savanna, Wooded Badlands, Pale Garden and finally the new Dappled Forest) and contain various valuable loot: survival loot(food, mob drop items etc.), resources, early game tools, weapons and armor and exploration maps.

Camps are a great addition to the game that encourages players to explore both early on in the game for the survival loot and later into the game for the sake of exploration maps.

PRO TIP

Most Abandoned Camps have a hidden chest with more valuable loot. It’s located directly underneath the lonely gravel block, found somewhere near the camp(within 5 - 10 blocks radius, do not wonder off too far looking for it).

New Explorer Maps

Remember how we mentioned the “New Explorer Maps” as a part of the loot in the Abandoned Camp? Well, this is exactly what it sounds like. This is the map meant for explorers, it leads to the bigger dungeon-like structures in the game, such as Ancient City, Trial Chambers, Woodland Mansion, Dessert Pyramid, Jungle Pyramid and Warm Ocean Ruins.

These maps help players find the desired structures without aimlessly wandering around the world or mining in the cave. However to get those maps, players first need to find Abandoned Camp, making it a perfect catalyst to start an amazing adventure. This is what we meant when we said that Abandoned Camps encourage players to explore — they are never the final goal, but a pleasant beginning to the grand adventure.

Cushions

Highly anticipated blocks, which was asked for thousands of times by builders and players that are big into SMP / roleplays — comfy, colorful cushions. Just like players wanted, cushions are a placeable block, which you can actually sit on, no mods or datapacks needed!

Cushion come in 16 different colors, as they are crafted using another newest addition to the game — Wool Slabs. Meaning that there is as much different cushion as there is different wool colors.

Despite how silly it sounds, it’s one of those features that has been requested for years, and finally it saw the light of the day, it’s finally in the game, read to go!

Straw Beds

This new item completely changes how players will travel from this point onward. Do you remember the awkward times you had to take a bed with yourself when going on a long adventure to skip nights? Right, and then when you actually do your spawnpoint changes, and the bed takes up space. Well no more of that, using Straw Bed you can sleep and skip the night without setting up a new spawnpoint and the bed breaks after a single use, making it a convenient, disposable item designed specifically for exploration and travelling.

The crafting recipe for the Straw Bed also plays nicely to its disposable single-use nature. Using 3 hay bales, you can craft 4 Straw Beds, making them a pretty cheap and convenient to use travel item!

IMPORTANT

Keep in mind that just like the normal bed, Straw Beds cannot be used in the Nether or End dimensions.

New Building Blocks: Wool & Concrete Additions

Like you might’ve noticed already, Wilderness Bound is the massive win for builders in the Minecraft community, they really did struck gold with this one! Alongside the new Poplar Wood Set, we finally got stairs and slab variations to very widely used blocks — Wool and Concrete.

• Wool stairs and slabs are available in 16 different colors, as much as there are different colors of wool blocks. They are great to add nice, cozy vibe to the builds, make furniture(like sofas and cozy chairs) and utilize in Redstone builds when it comes to vibration-dampening for different Skulk mechanisms. As you might recall from the section about Cushions, they are already used in crafting as well!
• Concrete stairs and slabs are also available in 16 different colors, as much as there are different colors of concrete blocks. It’s a game changer when it comes to building something more modern, we are sure to see a rise in a more modern designs with this new addition to the game.

What to Do First After Updating

1. Check the official change log from Mojang, to make sure you know everything there is to know.
2. Back up your world before loading into it, so you can go back to the old, yet unchanged version in case the world generation breaks.
3. Explore new chunks: all new additions to the game be it Dappled Forest or Abandoned Camps will only generate in yet unexplored chunks, if this is not a new world.
4. Collect new resources: it’s always a good idea to stock up on the new resources, so you will have some spare ones and to make sure you won’t forget about them all together.
5. Test new mechanics: get yourself familiar with the new Cushion and Straw Bed mechanics, so you will know what to do when you actually need to use them.
6. Try out new building blocks: when you’ve seen the block, know how to get it, you will already know how to properly plan your future builds.
7. If you own a server, test server performance and plugins locally before updating a public SMP.

Do You Need a New World for Wilderness Bound?

No, of course not. You can use your own world, just before you do that, do and keep in mind a few things:

• Back up your world: just like we said prior, the world generation might falter, to keep you world safe you absolutely should back up your world before the first launch on the new version of the game.
• New chunks: again, just like it was mentioned a moment ago all new additions to the game will only generate in yet unexplored chunks.

So if you want to see new game feature right away, as quickly as possible, new world might be a better choice. However, if you goal is to simply update to the newest version, you absolutely don’t have to create a new world — use you old one, just proceed with caution.

Server Owner Checklist Before Updating

If you own Minecraft Java server, updating is always a risk, so to keep your server and the world safe, we suggest you follow these steps:

1. Create Full Backup: Updating without a backup can be problematic even for a singleplayer world, when we are talking on a server scale, always make backup before implementing major changes to the server, including game updates.
2. Check Server Software Compatibility: Ensure your server software supports Java 26.3. If you use Paper, Purpur, or Spigot, you may need to wait a few days for stable compatible builds.
3. Verify Mods and Plugins Compatibility: If you run Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge, check that your mod loader and all essential mods have been updated to the newest version of the game — 26.3.
4. Check Resource packs and Datapacks: Make sure your custom packs are formatted for the new version to avoid visual bugs or broken recipes.
