    Zombie villagers, what are they?

While wandering around in your Minecraft world, you’ve probably stumbled upon zombies lots of times. You might’ve noticed that they are all the same: some have weapons or armor on them, some don’t, but in their core they are the same – similar to the player's default skin, Steve. However, with a lower chance, you’ve probably encountered a different zombie. The one with a different model, with a big nose just like villagers have. That's a zombie villager.

Where to Find a Zombie Villager in Minecraft

Some of the zombie villagers just spawn into the world just like any other hostile mob, some are actual villagers who got infected by a zombie.

Zombie villagers are also guaranteed to spawn in an Abandoned Village(Zombie Village). Which, as you might’ve guessed, is just like a normal village, but with broken houses, lots of cobwebs and no actual villagers. If you ever found this structure, consider yourself lucky, as it only has a 2% spawn chance.

Also, with a certain chance, in biomes like snowy taigas, snowy plains, or snowy slopes, you can find Igloo. How is this related to zombie villagers? Well, if you break the carpet inside the Igloo, you will find an entrance to the basement. There, you will find a locked zombie villager, a chest with loot and a brewing stand. Was someone running laboratory tests on zombie villagers before your visit?

What is the difference between a zombie and a zombie villager?

Inherently, zombie villagers are just like any other zombie in the game: a little dumb, with straightforward attacks. Yet, rarely do developers add differences in appearance to mobs just for the sake of diversity. You’d be right to think this, as zombie villagers have a unique interaction with the player – they can be cured.

    Curing zombie villagers

Cured? Yes, that’s right. As a player, you can cure zombie villagers. Doesn’t matter if it just spawned into the world, or became like this due to infection.

How can you cure a zombie villager? First, you need to throw a potion of weakness at them, then feed them a golden apple, and finally, wait for about 3 - 5 minutes. That’s it!

Curing zombie villagers: how to acquire required items?

The process is rather simple, as you’ve seen for yourself in the previous paragraph. The hardest part is to collect all the items for this and somehow make sure that the zombie villager stays put. To make things easier, we made a checklist of all the items you need to acquire and how you can do so:

    Golden Apple

This item can be acquired in a couple different ways:

    1) Crafting: with 1 apple and 8 gold ingots, using a crafting table, you can make 1 golden apple. Considering gold is quite easy to find, this shouldn’t be a problem at all.

    2) Looting: most of the dungeons have golden apples listed as a possible loot item. Here’s all the dungeons you can find it in:

    • Igloo: 100% chance. If an igloo is generated with a basement, the chest down there is guaranteed to have exactly one golden apple.
    • Ancient City(City Center): 100% chance for one specific apple. It is hidden within the secret redstone lab beneath the central portal frame structure.
    • Mineshaft: ~28% chance.
    • Desert Pyramid: ~22% chance.
    • Woodland Mansion: ~21.5% chance.
    • Ruined Portal: ~20.5% chance.
    • Monster Room(Dungeon): ~19.4% chance.
    • Bastion Remnant: ~10% chance.
    • Trial Chambers: ~8.3% chance.
    • Underwater Ruins: ~4.3% chance.
    • Stronghold: ~2.5% chance.

    Splash potion of weakness

Unlike other potions in the game, this in particular doesn’t require nether wart(a plant which can be found in Nether Fortress), which makes it more accessible for players on different stages of the game. So here’s how to get it:

    1) Brewing: To brew a potion you will obviously need a brewing stand, keep that in mind. You will also need: water bottle, blaze powder, fermented spider eye, gunpowder. Here’s a step by step guide on how to brew it:

    1. Place blaze powder to the top-left slot in the brewing stand, to fuel it.
    2. Place water bottles
    3. Place fermented spider eye to the top ingredient slot and wait a bit. Once it finishes brewing, you should have a potion of weakness.

    4. Then, place gunpowder to the same slot as the fermented spider eye to convert these potions into splash potions of weakness.

    5. Done!

    2) Looting: alternatively, you can find this potion in only one structure – an Igloo. We mentioned that in the basement, an Igloo has a brewing stand, but not only that, if you look into the brewing stand, there will be already brewed splash potion of weakness for you.

    Zombie villager

It’s a hostile mob, so in order to cure it, first you need to make it stay put. The best way to do it, is to barricade it somewhere using blocks. Then climb on top of the barricade, and proceed with the curing process standing above the zombie. Just make sure that there is no sunlight, where the zombie villager stays as it will simply burn, just like a normal zombie. Alternatively, you can use a boat to make a zombie villager sit there, which will immobilize them, until you break it. If you were lucky to find an Igloo, the zombie villager there will already be locked in the cell, which makes the process a whole lot easier.

Congratulations, if you’ve done everything correctly and with caution, after 3 - 5 minutes, you should have a cured villager, who will be very thankful to you for saving them!

Why would you cure a zombie villager?

Now that you know what zombie villagers are and how to cure them, you might’ve asked yourself, why would I do it? Despite how it seems, there is a real profit for you as a player to cure a zombie villager. Once the villager is cured, it will provide a special discount just for you without any time limit. Additionally, if it was a village who got infected, after being cured, he will keep the same trades as before they were infected. Meaning, you can intentionally infect villagers with good trades, to make them even more profitable. It’s a mechanic used by many skilled players, to create trade halls with the best possible prices.

    NOTE

Depending on the difficulty you are playing on, the chance of a villager getting infected varies between 50% to a 100%. To be  exact, on Hard difficulty the chance is 100%, on Normal - 50% and on Easy - 0%. So depending on the difficulty you are playing(you can check that by going into the game menu), there is a chance of villager simply dying, instead of getting infected, keep this in mind.

    Conclusion

That was our guide on zombie villagers and how to cure them, we hope it was useful to you. Thank you for reading and good luck!

    FAQ

    • Can zombie villagers despawn while they are not under the effect of cure?

Yes and no. Naturally, just like any mob, if a zombie villager is not under the effect of the cure already, it will despawn after some time, when the player goes far away from it. However, a zombie villager won’t despawn if they hold any item in their hand(just like any other zombie), if they are named using a name tag or if the player traded with the villager before it was infected.
    • Will discounts from curing the villager stack if I infect and cure it multiple times?

Starting from Minecraft 1.20.2 – no. The discount remains the same as after the first time the player cures a villager. On any other older version of the game – yes.
    • Can curing time be sped up?

Yes. Default time is from 3 to 5 minutes, however, if a player places iron bars and a bed in a 9x9x9 area around zombie villager, the process will slightly speed up.
    • Can you cure baby zombie villagers?

Yes. The process is the same, just keep in mind that you will also need to additionally wait until a cured baby villager grows into an adult villager, which can then take up a profession and provide trades with discounts.
    • Should I be careful not to hit zombie villager while they are under the cure?

As long as you do not kill them, there is nothing to worry about. The curing process won’t stop if you accidentally hit or push zombie villagers.

Hi, I'm Fawn. I started out just messing around in Minecraft with friends, then one thing led to another, and suddenly I was streaming, building worlds, and losing sleep over redstone logic. I like games that make you feel something—whether it’s a good RPG story like Nier or Kingdom Hearts, or the collective suffering of solo-queuing in Valorant. Mostly, I just create, experiment, and have fun with it :D
