    Why Iron Matters in Minecraft

Iron is and always has been the essential resource for any Minecraft player, all due to the fact how many crafting recipes include it. Be it tools and armor at the beginning of the game, end-game features like a beacon, or simply Redstone mechanisms – iron in Minecraft is needed everywhere.

    Iron_Minecraft

Reasonably, after such a statement comes the follow up: “How can i get a lot of iron easily?”. Iron  can be obtained with way more ways compared to more valuable ores like diamonds and ancient debris, and here are the best way to do so:

    • Looting: entertaining, fun, but  inefficient.
    • Mining: easiest way the only thing you need is a stone pickaxe or better and lots of time and patience.
    • Iron Farms: best way to get lots of iron, however only suitable for players that have already progressed quite a lot in the game.

Where Does Iron Spawn in Minecraft

As it was mentioned before, looting iron is quite fun, the thrill and excitement from exploring different places in your Minecraft world is truly pleasant. However, keep in mind that it can be quite dangerous depending on the place you’re looting and it is the least efficient method of  all.

As for where exactly can you find iron, take a look at the information below:

    • Villages. Specifically in blacksmith chests.
    • Mineshafts. Minecart chests usually contain a good amount of iron and other valuable loot such as name tags.
    • Shipwrecks and temples. Out of all places you can find iron in, these have the greatest amount, while not possessing much danger to the player.
    • Pillager outposts. Contain some iron, but usually not worth the hassle. If you ever find yourself looting one of those, be careful not to kill a pillager with a banner, because then you will be given a “Bad Omen” effect. If you step into the village with this effect you will activate a rade(Only applies to Minecraft versions below 1.21).
    • The Nether. Nether fortresses and bastions are another good source of iron for looting lovers, however, unlike shipwrecks and temples, it poses way greater levels of danger and should not be taken lightly.

Best Y Levels to Mine Iron in Minecraft

Like with most resources in Minecraft, one of the best ways to get lots of iron is deliberate mining. Iron is not such a rare ore, you can stumble upon it in all biomes, many places and very frequently. With that said, unlike diamonds or ancient debris, iron has several good Y levels for mining:

    • Y 16: for underground mining. This is perfect for new players, as it’s deep enough to find lots of iron, yet you don’t reach deepslate level, where instead of normal stone a much more  durable deepslate is used for cave generation. It takes way longer to break and so harder to mine for ore without proper gear.
    • Y 232: for high-altitude mining. After the Minecraft 1.18 update the world generation was changed, and so very deep caves and very high mountains started to generate. Iron can be frequently found exposed on the surface of such high mountains.
    • Y -8 to Y -56: for large veins mining in deep caves. If you’ve advanced well enough, and have a good gear(at least full iron gear, but preferably diamond or netherite one), this is a great choice for you, since you can find way more iron on deepslate level.

Best mining strategies for iron in Minecraft

With this question out of the way, following the logic of our previous articles, let’s move on to the best mining strategies. Like with any other ores in the game, there are several mining strategies, including one unique to iron mining:

    • Cave exploration: simplest method of all, suitable for anyone seeking a good balance of entertainment and profit. Though it is quite dangerous, especially for new players.
    • Large vein mining: similar to cave exploration, but more suitable for advanced players, as this requires you to go into the deep caves(Recall that large veins spawn at Y  -8  to Y -56).
    • Strip Mining: method familiar to all of our readers from the articles about diamonds and netherite. It is the safest, most efficient method, however it is rather boring. To use this method just dig a long tunnel, then dig smaller tunnels to the side of the main one with 2 blocks in between(if you would like a more detailed guide, check out our previous articles).

    Iron farms Minecraft

“Iron farms?”, you might ask. Yes indeed, though it doesn’t look anything like the classic image of crop farm you have in mind, it serves the same purpose: unlimited production of iron. Basically, iron farms are somewhat complex builds and mechanisms created by players that use game mechanics to farm unlimited amounts of iron.

What game mechanic? Villagers, or rather their behaviour. If there are 1 or more villagers in a certain place, the game treats it as a village. If those villagers are threatened by a hostile mod, for instance a zombie, it will trigger the spawn of the iron golem. Usually that iron golem is later killed in one way or another, and the loot from it(iron ingots) is stored somewhere. For all of that to happen a player needs to be around the farm, to load the chunks(or you  can alternatively build a special mechanism that will load the chunk for you instead). This is the general principle of how iron farms work. Of course, they can differ in the amount of iron they  produce, size, resource requirements, etc to fit different players on different stages of the game.

Now, describing how to build an iron farm can take an article of its own, also it’s way easier to follow video tutorials for such things, than rely on a text explanation. Additionally, there are different farms for different versions of the game. With that in mind, if you find yourself in a position where you need to build an iron farm, we suggest you the following:

    • Open youtube.com.
    • Search “Iron farm Minecraft [your version of the game]”.
    • Choose the one that seems to fit your stage in the game.
    • Follow the tutorial.

    Short description

    • Follow the tutorial.

Thank you for reading, and good luck!
